Zen Teacher Assignment

Pick a single situation—whether it’s balancing your checkbook, writing a blog post, explaining a concept to your students, vacuuming your family room, or listening to your child’s stories from his day—and pay close attention. Notice what’s really happening. See what’s really there. And do it without the idea that it needs to be anything other than what it is.

Everyday Mindfulness

Each moment is a gift, and we owe it to ourselves to be conscious of that gift as it happens. No activity or experience should be exempt from our taking notice or being present with it. Even the most repetitive, mundane acts, such as paying the bills, shaving, or taking a breath can be made more “real” by being present as they take place. In these instances, we must resist the temptation to let these singular moments merely pass by unnoticed and, instead, embrace them and luxuriate in the beauty they have to offer.

If you think about it, opportunities to practice mindfulness and be appreciative present themselves to us during each and every activity, each and every day, even before we step foot out of our house. And yet we often ignore the chances we have to tune in to the gift of each occurrence, even when these occurrences have to happen anyway.

Let’s look at three activities that happen before we go to work in the morning: showering, eating breakfast, and driving to work. Each gives us the chance to be more aware of life’s moments.
